Perfect Timing: David Ivarson

David Ivarson

For David Ivarson, it all started in January of 2018 when he was an inpatient at Northwest Community Hospital. David, a man with incredible attention to detail, was very impressed with his nurse, Katie, who took her time and provided excellent care. He also remembers their shared love for dogs, a topic he would talk about with many of the nurses.

David and his wife, Kay, and two kids moved from Evanston to Arlington Heights in 1968. NCH was his go-to hospital for routine visits, but this was his first time as an inpatient and his first overnight stay in the 50 years he had lived in the area.

His appreciation and use of NCH grew over the next few years. He remembers Liz, a nurse in the ICU, "who lingered a bit longer in his room" as he and two old friends reminisced about the past. "She always came in with a smile on her face and said 'Hi'," David recalls.

"We are blessed to have good nurses. They are so nice, but they have to deal with a lot of things," David says. "They have a lot of patients who are sick and they even lose a few. These past few years have been especially difficult. They need a boost."

David has started a habit of donating in honor of nurses every time he finds himself in their care at NCH.

NCH Foundation's new Inspired Giving newsletter hit David's mailbox at the perfect time. He is giving serious consideration to including NCH and two other charities that are close to his heart in his future plans. He shared that his next steps are to talk with his financial advisor and attorney and that he encourages others to do the same.

When reflecting on his motivation to honor and support nurses, David states, "That would be a good legacy."
